1. Introduction
Successful English learning is dependent on various factors, including teaching material, linguistic analysis, and cultural interaction. Besides, classroom culture is also an essential part that can’t be ignored.
1.1 Background of the Study
Recent decades of years have witnessed a sequence of favor for English learning, and until now, English has become the compulsory course for over twenty years in China. In fact, classroom teaching not only involves language teaching, but also views of values, behaviors and cultural interactions. In other words, classroom culture matters a lot in affecting successful English teaching and learning. The construction of good English classroom culture helps students to master English language knowledge, to improve their pragmatic and communicative skills, and to improve classroom efficiency. Therefore, the construction of English classroom culture deserves more research.
Moreover, Taiwan and Mainland China share some similarities in English learning. They share similar mother tongue as well as historical backgrounds, which might affect their English learning to a certain extent. However, differences predominate after experiencing the development of nearly one century. Hence, it is worth researching on this study.
1.2 Purpose of the Study
This study manages to explore the overall situation of college English classroom culture in Taiwan and Mainland China.
The intention of the study is stated as the following two dimensions. Primarily, the author tries to find out the similarities and differences of college English classroom culture in Taiwan and Mainland China by means of questionnaire combined with interview. Furthermore, based on what has been found, some suggestions will be put forward to create more harmonious classroom culture in order to facilitate successful teaching and learning.
1.3 Significance of the Study
This study strives to make some significance in practical field.
From the practical dimension, the essential objective of this study is calling for more attention on how to create successful college English classroom culture in Mainland China. By analyzing the results of questionnaire, the study intends to investigate the differences of the present college English classroom culture in Taiwan and Mainland China and then probe the advantages and disadvantages of present situation of college English classroom culture in China, in order to propose some useful suggestions for college English education.
2. Literature review
2.1 The definition of classroom culture
As a result of the ambiguous definition of culture itself, the definition of classroom culture is still various among different researchers. Look up for Collins Cobuild Advanced Learner's Dictionary, culture consists of activities such as the arts and philosophy, which are considered to be important for the development of civilization and of people’s minds. Hitherto, we can conjecture classroom culture as a combination of activities and encounter of value which take place in a certain circumstance within certain amounts of people. The circumstance is a spatiotemporal concept, which refers to both at class time and in the classroom.
