A Comparative Study of A Room with a View in Different Media
Abstract:A Room with a View is E. M. Forster’s lightest and most optimistic work. The story is about a young lady named Lucy Honeychurch in the restrictive and repressed culture of Edwardian era England and her developing love for free-spirited young man George Emerson. It is both a romance and a critique of English society at the beginning of the 20th century. Since the publication of the novel A Room with a View in 1908, it has never ceased to be popular among the readers and has always remained to be an important work to be studied by the scholars from both home and abroad. And in 1985, the film A Room with a View adapted from the novel was directed by James Ivory and it gained a lot of applause for its distinctive aesthetic value and artistic connotation. The film adaption is faithful to the original novel and makes some reasonable extensions in specific details.
Up till now, the novel has been extensively studied from different aspects, such as the humanism, symbolism, feminism and other writing techniques, etc. But the comparative studies of novel and film adaption are hard to find. Because of the different forms, characteristics and creators’ thoughts existing in the novel and the film, the comparative study of A Room with a View in different media can be a good point to discuss.
This thesis is trying to figure out the contrast of narrative art of the novel and the film based on the theory of narratology. Specifically, the writer focuses on two aspects: story and discourse to discuss the differences in narrative content, including the plots, characterization and setting, and narrative methods, including the narrative time and focalization between the novel and the film, thus to have a better understanding of A Room with a view and the narrative transformation in different media.

摘 要:《看得见风景的房间》是福斯特小说中基调最明快的一部,讲述了一个受到爱德华时代英国文化限制和压迫的年轻女孩露西·霍尼彻奇在各种因素作用下放飞自我,渐渐明白自己对思想自由的年轻人乔治艾默森的爱。这既是一个浪漫的爱情故事又是对20世纪初英国社会的批判。自1908年小说出版以来,它一直受到读者的欢迎,并长期受到国内外学者的关注。1985年,由詹姆斯艾福利导演的经小说改编的同名电影上映并因其独特的审美价值和艺术内涵收获众多掌声。电影的改编十分忠于原著小说,并在一些具体细节上作了合理的扩展。
到目前为止,研究者们已从人文主义、象征主义、女权主义、写作技巧等不同方面对小说文本进行了深入的解读和探讨,但对于小说与电影的比较研究还很缺乏。由于小说和电影本身不同的形式、特点以及创作者的不同思想,对其不同媒体视域下的比较研究可以说是一个不错的研究视点。
本文试图从叙事学的理论出发,对不同媒体视域下《看得见风景的房间》的叙事艺术进行对比分析。具体来说,作者主要围绕故事和话语两个方面来研究包括情节、人物塑造和环境设置的叙述内容和涵盖时间和视角的叙事方式,从而更好地理解这部作品以及不同媒体之间的叙事转型。
