This paper attempts to make a specific analysis of Chinese male images in Hollywood movies of different historical periods and points out the image changes and its reasons, so as to makes us understand better the changes of Chinese international images and help promote Sino-American cultural communication.

II. Analysis of Typical Chinese Male Images in Early Hollywood Movies

2.1 Perilous Yellow-Race Intruder

   Before 1920s, Americans thought Chinese nation was inferior and they classified the yellow race as the lesser creature. Americans described the Chinese male images as the “Yellow Peril” intruders in distorted way. In Healthen Chinese and the Sunday School Teachers, the Caucasian played a Chinese laundry man and the Caucasian woman teachers took care of him. When he invited them to the laundress store and treated them with opium enthusiastically, the police broke into his house suddenly and he was put into jail due to smoking opium, but the female teachers were not arrested. Although the movie is short, it is vividly presented the impression and cognition of American to Chinese. That Chinese movie image impressed terribly on American’s mind. The “Yellow Peril” image of Chinese people in Hollywood movies existed for a long time.
