With the growing foreign exchanges and the sustained and rapid economic growth, China has stood on the international stage. Some large cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other domestic first-tier cities have become international metropolises. In this context, Chinese people have more and more opportunities to interact with the other cultures. Communication involves many areas,including politics,economy, military, culture, art, medicine, education and so on. However, in the process of cross-cultural communication, we may not understand the history, customs, traditions and habits of the West, which not only lead to cross-cultural communication failure, resulting in mutual misunderstanding and embarrassment, but also cause huge economic losses, and sometimes even lead to tension between countries. Therefore, many experts and scholars are interested in studying the cross-cultural communication obstacles. Therefore, this paper discusses the frequently occurred problems and solutions in cross-cultural communication and uses vivid examples to explain them. It mainly includes the following three parts: the connotation and main manifestations of cross-cultural communication, the main reasons for the cross-cultural communication obstacles, and the analysis of the countermeasures for the obstacles to cross-cultural communication.

II. The Connotation and Main Manifestation of Cross-cultural Communication Obstacles

   The cross-cultural obstacles in communication may be historical, social, psychological barriers. Although cross-cultural communication has been filled with adverse effects such as war, massacre, prejudice, discrimination, ethnocentrism, we can not ignore its great role in the history of human society. (Hu 28) Cultural similarity allows people to reduce uncertainty in communication, complete communication purposes successfully and save people’s time and energy. The basis , guiding principles and predictability of the cross-cultural communication have disappeared because the cross-cultural communication people from different cultural backgrounds. As a result, the cross-cultural communication obstacles have emerged and we have to pay attention to them. We must have a clear understanding of the cross-cultural obstacles if we want to communicate with others more smoothly.
